Effect of Educational Program Based on Health Belief Model for Elderly regarding Diabetic Retinopathyndromept

Abstract

Background: Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of vision loss among the elderly, often attributed to limited awareness and inadequate preventive behaviors. Aim: this study aimed to evaluate the effect of educational program based on health belief model for elderly regarding diabetic retinopathy. Design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized. Sample: A purposive sample of 399 diabetic elderly who agreed to participate in the study was utilized. Setting: The study was conducted at the outpatient clinic of the National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology. Tools: Data were collected using one instrument. Elderly belief on diabetic retinopathy questionnaire, which consisted of: Part 1: elderly demographic data; Part 2: elderly medical history; part 3 elderly belief on diabetic retinopathy questionnaire. Results: The results revealed that, 35% of the elderly had positive total belief score pre-educational program which improved to be 75% post educational program. Conclusion: The educational program based on the Health Belief Model significantly enhanced health beliefs regarding diabetic retinopathy among the elderly. Recommendations: Continuous educational program for elderly regarding diabetic retinopathy
