Association between Job Burnout and Severity of Menopausal Symptoms among staff Nurses

Abstract

One of the most important life transitions for women is menopause. Burnout not only disturbs nurses' well-being but also concessions patient safety, leading to increased errors and decreased quality of care. Aim: To assess the association between job burnout and severity of menopausal symptoms among staff nurses. Method: the study was carried out using a correlational descriptive design. One hundred menopausal nurses were chosen as a purposive sample from various departments at Menoufia University Hospital in Shebin El-Kom. Tools: three instruments used; Tool I: was interview questionnaire regarding (socio-demographic characteristics, medical with surgical history, as well as obstetrical history) of the studied sample, Tool II: was Greene Climacteric Scale to assess severity of menopausal symptoms, Toll III: Maslach Burnout Inventory Scale to assess the level of burnout were used. Results: 72% of the nurses in the study had low personal accomplishment, 92% had depersonalization, and 79% had high emotional exhaustion. Sixty percent of the study participants experienced moderate menopausal symptoms. However, the lowest percentage (5%) had mild levels of menopausal symptoms. Conclusions: There was a statistically significant positive regression between emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal achievement, and menopausal symptoms. Recommendation: Health education programs related to identification and management of job burnout should be developed for menopausal nurses and other health care workers.
